Title: The Hunger Games   Author: Suzanne Collins  Publisher: Scholastic Inc.

Summary:
Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen has had a tough life. District 12, the place where she lives, makes it even harder. District 12 is 1 of 12 Districts that makes up the nation of Panem and surrounds the nation's Capitol.  The Capitol is harsh, but The Hunger Games are even harsher. This annual event is set up for the Capitol's entertainment.  Each year, every District holds a drawing, (reaping,) for who is to go to The Hunger Games.  One boy and one girl between the ages 12- 18 from each District are sent to the Hunger Games to compete against each other.  If they lose, they die.  If they win, they get fame and fortune.  In Katniss' perspective, The Hunger Games are a death sentence.  When her younger sister's name is called during District 12's reaping, Katniss steps up and takes her place, thinking her chances of survival are much higher then her sister's.  Once The Hunger Games begin though, Katniss finds out how much of  a death sentence it really is.

Review:

Before I read this book, I had been told by many of my friends that it was really good and once I started reading it, I knew what they meant.

The way Suzanne Collins introduces Katniss and explains her situation, you feel as though you are there right along side Katniss experiencing what's she is due to  great detail.  The details don't stop just at the introduction.  Throughout the book, Collins describes every detail of The Hunger Games and Katniss' hardships.  The descriptions she gives also makes you dislike the Capitol more and more with every turn of the page.  With all this detail, I feel as though I am one of the characters.  That's one of my favorite effects with books!

The way Collins gives the story a little twist every now and then leaves the reader "hanging" for what might happen next.  (Another one of my favorite effects!)  One example is having Peeta Mellark join the Careers, otherwise known as the more dangerous people in The Hunger Games.  The reason he joined shocked me and probably a numerous amount of other readers.

After reading The Hunger Games, I'm not only excited to not only read the sequels but hopefully, some of Collins' future novels as well...
